City condemns attack on off-duty Law Enforcement officer

The officer was shot outside his home in Gugulethu last night in what-appears-to-be an attempted hijacking. The City calls on anyone with information about the incident to please come forward. Read more below:
The incident, in Gugulethu, happened at approximately 19:00.
According to the officer's wife, it was an attempted hijacking – the attackers fired numerous rounds, two of which hit the 40-year-old.
He was transported to hospital where he is in a stable condition.
'This callous attack cannot be condoned. It comes just a week after our annual Remembrance Service, and almost a year to the day that we lost another Law Enforcement officer. The City will support the South African Police Service in their investigation to ensure that those responsible are brought to book. I also want to encourage anyone in the community who knows anything about this incident and the identities of those involved, to please report it to the City's dedicated tip-off line. We will avail all services and support available through the City's Employee Assistance Programme to our staff member and his family on the path to recovery,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

If the information leads to a successful arrest, the person can receive a reward.
In general enforcement operations over the past week, the City's agencies arrested 230 suspects and issued 55 600 fines.
Metro Police officers arrested 42 suspects and issued 2 167 traffic and by-law fines
Among their successes on Sunday, 4 August:
K9s Kink and Kelev led their handlers to a 9mm pistol and various quantities of drugs hidden in a toolbox during a search of a property in Bellville South.
Officers arrested a 54-year-old suspect thought to have been selling drugs from his car in Wynberg. Officers found various quantities of mandrax, tik and heroin in the vehicle.
Law Enforcement officers made 161 arrests and issued 3 982 fines during enforcement operations.
On the roads, the Traffic Service issued 49 451 fines, impounded185 public transport vehicles and executed 1 581 warrants of arrest.
Officers also arrested 27 suspects of which 19 were for driving under the influence of alcohol, seven for reckless and negligent driving and one other, for an outstanding warrant.
The Public Emergency Communication Centre recorded 1 521 incidents this weekend, including 113 cases of assault and 55 cases of domestic violence.
Call takers also logged 69 motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents.
